"1982" - Side B - About The Songs

06 - Alison
Sleeve Notes...
You know when you realise you're being a dick, but you can't stop your mouth running away with itself? This is song is about that and how sometimes you just wish you could be a bit more like someone who only says something when it's really worth saying. Like fictional Dillon Panthers quarterback Matt Saracen for example.

07 - I Called Saul
Sleeve Notes...
This track is about someone who keeps inviting people into their life who are really, really bad for them, but they're drawn to them anyway. It uses a fictional character who controls and manipulates the people around him, but who everyone is desperate to please, as a metaphor for a multitude of real life characters.

08 - Copenhagen
Sleeve Notes...
This is a love song. But it's also a song about coming to terms with the parts of yourself you don't like very much, about striving to change, and about using someone in your life as inspiration for that change. The opening line sums up how I was feeling when I wrote the lyrics: "Sometimes I feel sad that I am human..."

09 - Her Rock
Sleeve Notes...
Her Rock is a track about how we always seem able to see things with wisdom and perspective when we're offering advice to someone else, but when we're trying to apply that same advice to our own lives, we often fall woefully short. It's a love song of sorts, but through the lense of how someone else sees you and how that isn't how you see yourself.

10 - Australia
Sleeve Notes...
When I was 19, I went to Australia for several months. Unbeknownst to me at the time, I met several people and visited several places that were inextricably linked to the woman I would end up marrying back in the UK. It was as if a trail of breadcrumbs had been left for me. The country itself and that time holds so many vivid memories, especially from the desert wilderness of the outback.
